8. Fold the rectangle into thirds, so the bottom 2 sections measure 3¼˝ high each and the top section measures 2˝ high, using the template as your guide. Note that the 2˝ section forms the backpack’s top flap.

9. Topstitch a straight line across each of the fold lines from Step 8.

10. For a more personalized feel, I hand embroidered the name of Toothy’s recipient onto the backpack.

11. Add pearl snap closures to the backpack, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

12. Pin the backpack to the back center area of Toothy, covering all raw ribbon ends.

13. Take a 2˝-long piece of ribbon and fold it in half to create a loop (A). Place this at the center top of your backpack, tucking the raw edges in between the Toothy body and backpack. This loop serves a dual purpose—it will visually look like the backpack handle, while also holding a new toothbrush for your toothless recipient. Make sure to test that your toothbrush handle fits snugly through the loop; adjust the ribbon length accordingly. B
